At the invitation of Society Education, on 21st March 2019 Mamo TCV Advocates delivered a talk regarding the General Data Protection Regulation (‘GDPR’). The event took place at ‘the Landmark’ in Qormi, Malta. On behalf of Mamo TCV Advocates, Dr Claude Micallef-Grimaud and Dr Warren Ciantar delivered their three-hour presentation titled: ‘The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): An Overview of its Most Salient Aspects’.

The presentation was split into two parts, with the first examining certain key features of the GDPR including the legal grounds for processing personal data, the new fines that may be imposed, new information requirements to data subjects via privacy policies, the contractual relationship between data controllers and data processors, data protection officers (DPOs) as well as security measures and data breach notification requirements.

The second part explored in detail the various data subject rights that exist under the GDPR regime. These include the right to access, right to rectification, right to erasure (or ‘right to be forgotten’), right to restriction of processing, right to data portability and the right to object to processing, among others.

The audience attending the talk was comprised of a variety of individuals from different backgrounds. Although mainly consisting of accountants and other professionals in the financial sector, legal counsel, DPOs and business operators were also present.
