MALTA – A GREAT PLACE TO DO BUSINESS

RELEASE DATE: 20 DECEMBER 2009

Malta – A Great Place to do Business, an article published in World Finance by Prof. Andrew Muscat

Bustling Malta earned its epithet as ‘The George Cross Island’ during the darkest days of the1939-45 war when it stood as a bastion of British sea power, commanding the Mediterranean. Set between the Italian island of Sicily and the North African coast, the strategic position of Malta had also seen it the subject of a previous siege by the Turks and subject for several centuries to the multi-national Order of the Knights of St. John. Napoleon had interests here too, before the Royal Navy took control and the British Union Flag fluttered over Valletta’s huge harbour. A wartime haven for allied convoys, the island gained independence in the 1960s and is now a member of the European Union, though not yet of the eurozone.

Besides supporting an important tourism sector and still having working dockyards, Malta is now attracting significant inward investment in other sectors too, offering a decidedly probusiness environment, economic and political stability, healthy industrial relateions and competitive labour costs.
